South Yorkshire police seized approximately £110,000 in cash and gold during coordinated raids on August 4 and 5. The operation targeted illegal gambling venues in Sheffield and Doncaster, resulting in three arrests.
Law enforcement officers executed the raids under Operation Duxford and Operation Snaresbrook. Authorities collaborated with the Gambling Commission, the Yorkshire & Humber Regional and Organised Crime Unit, and Immigration Enforcement. Inspectors discovered 16 unlicensed betting terminals alongside significant quantities of gold bars, coins, and jewellery.
Arrests and Regulatory Response
Three individuals were detained on suspicion of gambling and immigration offences, as well as possession of a bladed article. Inspector Amy Mellor of the South West Neighbourhood Policing Team stated that the activity demonstrates effective partnership working. She noted that the intelligence gathered allows authorities to address the trade of illegal gambling, which often funds wider organised crime.
Sue Young, executive director of operations at the Gambling Commission, emphasized that unlicensed operators frequently exploit vulnerable individuals. She added that these entities undermine legitimate regulated businesses and maintain links to broader criminal activity.
Earlier in July, authorities conducted raids on two unlicensed gambling venues in Doncaster.
